It’s standard practice to talk about what a rifle has, not what it lacks. But Kimber’s Mountain Ascent is conspicuous not for what it includes but what it leaves out: namely, weight. Can you imagine a .30-06 bolt-action rifle weighing less than 6 pounds? This unit does. In fact it weighs 5 pounds, 2 ounces without a scope, mounts and ammo on board. Short-action chamberings weigh even less, a mere 4 pounds, 13 ounces. In case anyone missed the significance of that, let’s put it this way: The Mountain Ascent is lightest production big-game rifle in the world. Learn more about it with the video embedded above, hosted by American Hunter Editor-in-Chief J. Scott Olmsted. MSRP: $2,040; kimberamerica.com.

Curious how to create a .308-chambered AR-10 that *doesn't* suck to carry into the backcountry? Dennis Bradley does just that, off a DPMS-pattern lower, and comes it at a shocking weight (read on for the exact number, but it is sub 2). Read on, to see how he does it.

More than $1.3 Billion Raised by Duck Stamp Sales

On June 26 the 2026-2027 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, aka Duck Stamp, went on sale. The fact it raises about $40 million for conservation annually gets the headlines, but there are underpublicized benefits for making the $25 purchase—even non-hunters.
