Last year Savage Arms wowed consumers with the introduction of its A17—winner of our Golden Bullseye Award for Rifle of the Year—so a line expansion was inevitable. The company delivered the first of what should likely be many A17 variants at SHOT Show. Coming in 2016 are Sporter models of the award-winning rifle.

Just to catch you up: The first high-performance semi-automatic rimfire specifically designed for the .17 HMR cartridge, the A17 proved to be a hit with rimfire enthusiasts throughout the industry. So we have to imagine that the Sporter models will be positively received. The new A17 Sporter, A17 Target Sporter and A17 Target Sporter Thumbhole are due to join the original A17. All three models rely on Savage’s unique delayed-blowback action to deliver reliable semi-automatic operation with the powerful, low-recoil cartridge.

The A17 Target Sporter and A17 Sporter (flat comb) add a heavy barrel and gray wood-laminate stock to the amenities, while the A17 Target Sporter, Thumbhole sports a heavy fluted barrel and, as the name implies, a gray wood-laminate thumbhole stock.

Prices are due to remain reasonable, too. The Target Sporter will ship with an MSRP of $571, while the Target Sporter Thumbhole will list at $631.
