This week, we’re checking out the Mossberg 590R. While technically part of the company’s tactical shotgun lineup, the 590R would be a great turkey gun for any pump-action afficionado. The model we had in hand, the 590R Chisel, a 3-inch chambered 12 gauge, comes with a beautifully Cerakoted receiver, which contrasts nicely with its black stock, barrel and heat shield.

The “R” after 590 in this model is indicative of the model’s unique rotary safety, which can be reached without breaking grip, and is immediately familiar to anyone used to an AR platform. The grip module itself is also of an AR pattern, meaning you can swap it out with a wide variety of aftermarket options, though you likely will not want to given that it ships with a Magpul MOE+ already installed. It positions the hand nicely for smooth actuation of the flat profile trigger. Rear of this, the stock has a Length of Pull adjustable between eight positions, from 12.5 inches to 16.5 inches, and folds flat via a Chisel mount for easy transport in and out of the field.

Up top, Magpul MBUS 3 Adjustable sights sit front and rear, though a full stretch of Picatinny rail resides above the receiver for the easy attachment of an optic. The receiver itself has an enlarged, beveled loading port with an exposed follower for easy loading. Finally, the 18.5-inch, heat-shielded barrel is threaded for an Accu-Choke system, though only a cylinder bore choke comes installed from the factory. All in all, this scattergun tips the scales at just 7.6 pounds.

Alligator Hunting Opportunities Are Expanding

This year, both Florida and Louisiana are expanding or introducing new opportunities for alligator hunts. For decades, Florida has estimated that there are over one million in the state—it is, of course, hard to count alligators. Louisiana now says its alligator population exceeds three million. The two states have managed their alligator populations very differently over the last half century, but now both are expanding hunting opportunities to help manage alligator populations.
