On this week's #SundayGunday, we’re checking out the R95 .45-70 Triple Black, from Rossi USA. A smooth-shooting lever action with blacked out looks, the R95 is a weatherproof hard charger that will serve hunters well from the blind, to the treestand and beyond.

As its name implies, the gun is chambered in venerable .45-70, which has long been trusted for virtually every sort of game on the North American continent. The muzzle on the gun’s 16.5-inch barrel is threaded to 5/8x24 TPI, for the easy addition of a can to quiet things down, particularly if you’re running increasingly popular subsonic rounds. A 1:12 inch twist rate—rotating the bullet once every 12 inches, in its six groove rifling—is perfect for stabilizing the sorts of heavy-for-caliber bullets generally found in these loads.

Up top, a stretch of Picatinny rail runs from the back of the receiver midway up the barrel, making it easy to attach any magnified optic or red-dot of your choice. If you don’t favor that sort of upgrade, the gun also has a drift adjustable front sight and a rear peep sight, which is more than enough for hunting the big woods. Beneath the barrel, a five round tubular magazine feeds shells right into the levered action, which can be charged with a fast, smooth cycle of the hand.

The trigger breaks nice and crisp, but don’t forget to take off the cross bolt safety before firing, which sits just beneath the hammer. In terms of construction, the gun’s barrel and frame are alloy steel finished in black oxide, while the blackened stock and fore-end are made of wood. For more information on this handy little deer slayer, which could also serve as an excellent remedy for bears when hunting grizzly country and retails for $1363.99, visit rossiusa.com.
