On June 4, it was announced that SIG Sauer is closing. But it’s not SIG Sauer, Inc. here in the United States, based in New Hampshire. No, the plant being shuttered is in Eckernförde, GermanySIG Sauer GmbH. Also, SIG Sauer AG in Neuhausen, Switzerland, is doing just fine, continuing to produce arms for the Swiss military and police.

This closing only affects a couple handgun models, some rifles and about 130 employees in northern Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein. Although Lorenz Sauer dates back to 1751 in Suhl, Thuringia, and it became J.P. Sauer & Son in 1840, the move to the Eckernförde location didn’t come until 1951—not long after the Iron Curtain went up across Europe. Walther moved out of the same region when the reality of Communist oppression became clear.

According to a statement from SIG Sauer: “L&O Holding group has announced that it is closing its SIG SAUER, GmbH (Germany) division in Eckernförde, Germany. L&O Holding owns and operates numerous business units in the defense and hunting market including SIG SAUER, GmbH (Germany), SIG SAUER, Inc. (U.S.A.), and German Sports Group, GmbH (GSG), among others.”

Member's Hunt: The Dogger’s Window

A dogger’s goal while pushing deer is to drive the prey into a pocket formed by others in his gang, those hunters who are posted about a hundred yards apart along strategic locations up to a half-mile away from the dogger’s starting point. When everyone is in position, the dogger weaves his way through the woods into the wind and pocket formed by the other hunters. The approaching sound of the dogger snapping twigs and crunching leaves alerts unsuspecting deer.
