In 2025, Federal introduced the world to the 7mm Backcountry cartridge featuring the company’s Peak Alloy case design. In a nutshell, this new Peak Alloy case material is strong stuff, allowing Federal to increase the pressures inside to roughly 80,000 PSI, providing the fuel tank needed in the new 7mm Backcountry to do something previously unheard of: launch a 170-grain, 7mm projectile at about 3000 fps from a short, 20-inch barrel. With the rise in popularity of shorter, suppressed rifle barrels in the shooting and hunting world, this new cartridge and case technology was the talk of the town.

Amidst the fanfare, shooters started to ask some obvious questions, and foremost among them was this: Can this new Peak-Alloy case technology be employed in existing cartridges? We all had our theories, but Federal just answered it as definitively as one could with a resounding “Yes.”

Welcome to the new 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak

6.5 Creed Peak cartridges

Federal claims this new cartridge can be fired safely in nearly any existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, effectively turning your rifle into a hot-rod with amazing increases in ballistic performance, exceeding that of the 6.5 PRC!

Here’s what Federals says the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak can do for you:

  • Increase in velocity of roughly 300 fps over a standard 6.5 Creedmoor
  • Exceed 6.5 PRC ballistics performance (velocity increase of 50-100 fps over the 6.5 PRC) with less felt recoil, and without the need to buy a new rifle
  • Compatible with existing 6.5 Creedmoor firearms (bolt-action, gas guns, lever-guns, etc.)
  • Excel in lightweight, short-barrel rifle systems with suppressors
  • Minimal to no increase in felt recoil over a standard 6.5 Creedmoor

6.5 Cred +Peak Fact Sheet

Our initial testing revealed just that. We shot Federal’s 130-grain Terminal Ascent 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak from a 6.5 Creedmoor Christensen Arms MPR rifle with a 24-inch barrel and the results were as follows:

  • 3074 fps muzzle velocity (10-shot average)
  • 2,727.3 ft.-lbs. of kinetic energy at the muzzle (10-shot average)
  • Std. Dev. Of 7.9 (10-shot average)

That’s an average of 275 fps increased muzzle velocity over Federal’s standard 130-grain, 6.5 Creedmoor Terminal Ascent!

“When Federal introduced the 7mm Backcountry cartridge in 2025, we set the wheels in motion that will forever change high-performance rifle ammunition performance,” said Chairman and CEO Jason Vanderbrink. “We are now excited to roll out another Peak Alloy cartridge option. Our 7mm Backcountry and all-new 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak truly unlock unprecedented performance and are ushering in a new era of ammunition. The best part of the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is that hunters and target shooters are likely to already own a rifle that can shoot it,” said Vanderbrink.

6.5 Creed +Peak Terminal Ascent and Fusion Tipped

Federal’s initial offerings in 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak will include the 130-grain Terminal Ascent and the 150-grain Fusion Tipped. Soon to follow will be the 127-grain Barnes LRX, the 156-grain Berger Elite Hunter and the Gold Medal 153-grain Sierra Tipped MatchKing.

Federal notes that shooters should check with their firearm manufacturer for guidance on compatibility with the new 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak ammo and will have a list of compatible manufacturers on the company’s website.
