Mountain lion sightings aren't particularly uncommon throughout California's more rural regions, but glimpsing one of the big cats in a more urban setting is very rare. It happens, though—most recently in the region of Los Angeles known as Hollywood Hills.

A report from KTLA has revealed security camera footage submitted by a Hollywood Hills resident that clearly shows mountain lion strolling through the residential area's streets just before dawn on March 5.

According to the report, the cougar (a male) wandered over from nearby Griffith Park, and has been confirmed to have been in the area since at least March 2012, when he was briefly captured and radio-collared by wildlife biologists.

This particular mountain lion is already quite famous—he's been featured in National Geographic and has been mentioned on a number of occasions by the Los Angeles Times.

Exactly what convinced Hollywood's unofficial mascot to wander through a neighborhood just before the crack of dawn isn't known. He's out and about just a few minutes before 6 a.m., which could have easily led to a run in with an early morning jogger or dog-walker. Fortunately, that didn't come to pass.
