FLIR Systems, Inc., has announced the impending release of the FLIR ONE, a thermal imaging accessory for smartphones. The FLIR One is a lightweight accessory that's designed to transform an iPhone 5 or 5s into a thermal imaging device—a tool hunters might find most handy.

When paired with its iPhone app, FLIR ONE displays live infrared imagery that allows the user to see the world from a thermal perspective. The program detects invisible heat energy, giving hunters the ability to "see" and measure variances in temperature—which, used properly, could certainly assist a hunter in picking out game.

“FLIR is dedicated to developing and delivering technologies that provide users with a sixth sense,” said Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR Systems. “Based on technology that was formerly reserved for the military, FLIR ONE is the first in a new generation of affordable thermal imaging devices designed to inspire imaginative and innovative uses by consumers. This represents a revolutionary step forward for both FLIR Systems and thermal imaging.”

FLIR ONE is designed to detect a broad range of temperatures and has a spot temperature measurement display. Users can capture either photos or videos and share them via text, email, or social media through the FLIR ONE app.

The accessory weighs 3.9 ozs., and was engineered to add minimal size and weight to its operator's phone.

FLIR ONE will be available in the U.S. for pre-orders on FLIR.com/FLIRONE beginning July 23, 2014 at 9 a.m. ET with an MSRP of $349.99. Prior FLIR ONE pre-registrants in the U.S. will receive special access to pre-orders starting today, July 22, 2014 at 9 a.m. ET. Pre-ordered units are expected to ship to consumers beginning the week of August 4, 2014.
