On this week's #SundayGunday, we’re checking out a 9mm, which is not something we do very often is this series, focused as it is on hunters and hunting guns. The TNW Firearms Aero Survival Rifle LTE, however, is not your standard 9mm. While it may not quite be a bonafide hunting rifle, this is a gun designed specifically for those who spend their lives deep in the great outdoors.
Weighing in at under 4 pounds, this pistol caliber carbine is designed for toolless takedown, making it a perfect backpack or truck gun. Now this lightness and functionality does come at a slight cost—the gun uses all proprietary parts, none of which are interchangeable with rifles in other chamberings. That does not extend to the magazine, however, as the gun feeds from Glock pattern mags. It ships with one 33 rounder (or less, if you live in a capacity restricted state). The barrel is carbine length at 16.25 inches, for excellent accuracy.

Atop the upper receiver, a full stretch of Picatinny rail sits elevated, making it the perfect height for a red-dot or reflex sight. Beneath this, though, is where the gun really shines. The gun’s action is fun. Real fun. Anyone who is a fan of the classic slap-to-charge action of a certain legendary 9mm carbine will absolutely love this feature. Even cooler, the bolt face can be flipped to utilize a left side ejection port, and the bolt handle can also be swapped, meaning the gun can be easily configured for lefties. The safety is a cross bolt, toward the front of the trigger guard, while the pistol grip holds the index in an excellent position on the trigger. Finally, to the rear, a six-position buttstock sits on the ASR buffer tube, allowing the gun to be customized to the stature and needs of every shooter.

This is a fun gun to shoot and an easy platform to take down, utilizing a threaded sleeve on the barrel to lock it perfectly into place, and two easily removable takedown pins to separate the upper and lower receivers.
