This week on #SundayGunday, we’re revisiting a gun that has steadily grown in popularity since its 2020 introduction, thanks in no small part to the inherent strength of its action. Now that very action has extended to include long actions as well. New for 2024, the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint has added 20 new long-action SKUs to its lineup.

Based around the Remington 700-footprint, the Model 2020 is designed for peak accuracy and rapidity. Its fluted, Nitrided, 4140 tool steel bolt utilizes dual locking lugs, that themselves run in raceways cut by electrical discharge machining for consistent engagement. Meanwhile, an extraction cam ensures the spent shell is pushed out, no matter what conditions are encountered in the field. This is further aided by an enlarged ejection port and sliding extractor. Dual cocking cams on the bolt allow for toolless disassembly and maintenance in the field.

The action feeds cartridges up a hybrid dual-plane feed ramp, from a detachable AICS-pattern box magazine. An integral machined recoil lug securely mates the receiver to the pillar-bedded stock. The stock is constructed by AG Composites from hand-laid carbon fiber, and can be had in adjustable or non-adjustable configurations. It can be finished in either Evergreen or Ridgeline camo, and comes equipped with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. While this was already comfortable on the lighter-recoiling short actions, it comes in even more handy on these new, harder-charging long-action variants, like our 7 PRC test model. The stock boasts five QD mounts from its buttstock to its fore-end, while three M-Lok slots sit along the bottom side of its fore-end for the easy addition of a bipod or sling.

Shots are released via a single-stage TriggerTech Field trigger adjustable from 2.5-5 pounds. It employs Frictionless Release Technology and a patented, free floating roller to help the Model 2020 Waypoint achieve a lock time of 1.9 milliseconds from trigger pull to primer strike.

Barrel length is dependent on chambering, but the buyer can choose between a standard, glutted steel barrel or a BSF carbon-fiber wrapped barrel. Both variants come with a radial, Springfield Armory muzzle brake attached to the 5/8x24 TPI threaded muzzle, and a .75 MOA guarantee.

Finally, while the receiver is drilled and tapped for Remington 700 Short Action pattern bases, the gun does come with a full-length Picatinny rail to make it easy to fit with a scope right out of the box.
