One of the most talked-about shotguns since its debut at SHOT Show 2017 has been the Mossberg 590 Shockwave. The platform was initially introduced in a 12-gauge, with a 20-gauge offering and additional 12-gauge models following shortly. Now, Mossberg is offering the lightweight, compact 590 Shockwave in .410-bore.

This new .410-bore version of the 590 Shockwave features a 14-inch barrel length, Raptor pistol grip, strapped forend, a 5+1 capacity and weighs in at a mere 4.24 pounds. With an overall length of 26.37 inches, the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) has classified this compact 590 Shockwave platform as a “Non-NFA Firearm,” requiring no tax stamp for transfers. Defined as a firearm, not a long gun, Federal Law does require the purchaser of a 590 Shockwave to be 21 years of age.

Built on Mossberg’s proven pump-action design, the 590 Shockwave features non-binding twin action bars; positive steel-to-steel lock-up; an anti-jam elevator; dual extractors; and ambidextrous top-mounted safety. The 590 design also includes an anodized aluminum receiver, drilled and tapped for ease of adding optics, and magazine tube with convenient clean-out cap.

The .410-bore offering is 2 ½- and 3-inch capable, features a heavy-walled, cylinder bore barrel with single bead sight and sling swivel studs. The Shockwave Raptor pistol grip, constructed of durable polymer, has an enhanced textured finish and “bird’s head” shaped-profile, allowing for greater control while lessening felt recoil. The cob-styled, synthetic forend is strapped for safety, greater control and smoother operation. The grip and forend feature a black finish and exposed metalwork has a complementing matte blue finish. The .410-bore 590 Shockwave has an MSRP of $455.
