On this week's #SundayGunday, were checking out a cool series of shooting bags from Armageddon Gear, designed specifically for hunters. When most folks think of shooting bags, they tend to think of the sort of front and rear bags common for benchrest shooting or zeroing a rifle. One under the fore-end, the other under the buttstock, is far and away one of the most stable ways to discharge a firearm. Competitive shooters, however, have been changing the game on shooting bags in recent years, as they have begun finding ways to use them off barricades and in field-style scenarios. It was only a matter of time before hunters took note. Enter Armageddon Gear. Having long built bags for some of the fastest competitors on the planet, the company has now adapted its expertise to helping hunters achieve stability in the field.

Front and Rear Bags

First off is the Waxed Canvas Optimized Game Changer. Armageddon crafted this bag from supple yet rugged waxed canvas, and allows the buyer to pick from two fills to best fit their own balance between stability and packability. The heavy fill weighs the bag down to seven pounds, while Spexlite, the lightest option, weighs just a pound and a half. The bag boasts an upside-down V on its bottom to make it easy to lock onto fences or tree limbs, but can also be used on almost any surface whether V-side up or V-side down. A two handles make it easy to carry, and the bag sits at 10 inches long, six-inches wide and seven tall.

Bag in the field

Next is Armageddon’s super lightweight offering. Weighing in at a mere 11 ounces thanks to its Spexlite fill, this is the bag you reach for when burning miles of bootleather in the backcountry. With a  more moderate taper than the Waxed Canvas Optimized Game Changer, the Channel Lock boasts perpendicular V cuts, with a deep one running fore and aft on one side, while a much deeper one crosses it on the other side of the bag. This setup is perfect for locking the bag onto a rock, limb or blind window, while simultaneously being able to steady the rifle into the trough on the other side. The bag is eight-inches long, by 7.5 wide and three-inches high, and is light enough that is can be simply lashed to a pack using the included ITW Nexus Tac Link. Despite this intense lightness, the bag is still crafted from double waxed canvas for durability.

The Channel Lock bag retails for $74.99, while the Optimized Game Changer costs between $119.95-$169.95, depending on fill and color options. Behind the Bullet: The .308 Norma Magnum

Norma’s ballistician Nils Kvale saw the wisdom of having the velocity and horsepower of the .300 H&H Magnum, but in a shorter, more affordable receiver, and used the H&H case to develop his .358 Norma Magnum in 1959 as well as the .308 Norma Magnum one year later. The .308 Norma Magnum closely resembles the wildcat .30-338 cartridge, though the shoulder of the former is located a bit more toward the base than that of the .308 Norma Magnum. Intrigued?
