New emergency rules and resolutions for public hunting lands were approved last month by the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission.

At the end of April, poachers broke into the Imire Rhino and Wildlife Conservancy in Zimbabwe in search of rhinoceros horn—an incredibly valuable commodity on the international market. The poachers brutally shot and killed a tame 22-year-old black rhino male called Gomo and, with axe in tow, massacred its head and face and seized its horns.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is distributing more than $55 million to state fish and wildlife agencies through the State Wildlife Grant (SWG) Program to protect and manage species of conservation need, promote the recovery of wildlife and conserve habitats nationwide.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is the latest partner to join the Outdoor Stewards of Conservation Foundation’s (OSCF) “Fill A Bag While Filling Your Tag” program.

In early April, a federal judge in Brooklyn sentenced two men for trafficking protected birds and eggs into the United States in violation of the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Dr. John Waldrop of Cataula, Ga., was ordered to pay a $900,000 fine—one of the largest-ever for an ESA case—and serve three years of probation. Toney Jones of Eufala, Ala., was sentenced to six months of probation.

A record number of more than 3,000 elementary and middle school students learned to find and identify signs of species like the bobcat, raccoon, snowshoe hare and white-tailed deer in Vermont this winter.

The money we spend on hunting licenses, permits and other fees does more than just ensure future generations can also enjoy this great nation’s wildlife resources. It helps save lives, thanks to game wardens and other staff eager to harness their outdoor knowledge and skills whenever needed.
