4 Play Diaphragm Calls 4 Pack

The folks over at 4-Play turkey calls, not content to constrain themselves to their excellent line of box calls, have debuted a line of diaphragm calls that are sure to make toms close that las tidbit of distance. Four of them in total (true to 4-Plays name), the calls are available individually, or as a four call bundle. The company even went so far as to collaborate with some turkey hunting legends on a few of these designs.

Jeff Budz Call

First up is the Single Reed Jeff Budz Signature. Named after Jeff Budz, the 2015 World Turkey Hunting Championship winner, who was the first recorded hunter to tag a self-guided longbeard in all 49 states where turkey hunting is possible, this is a call sure to deliver reliable, lifelike tones in any scenario. If you're new to diaphragm calls, or simply love a call that's easy to use and hard to botch, this is the diaphragm for you.

Double Reed Crow's Tongue

Next is a classic Double Reed Crow's Tongue, so called for its two side cuts. This is another fairly easy to use call, with a high ceiling for more experienced callers. The tone is quite raspy, of a pitch that most toms seem to just love.

Triple Reed V Cut

Moving up the difficulty scale, next comes the Triple Reed V-Cut, with two side cuts. Harder to use, but almost indistinguishable in pitch, the Triple Reed V-Cut perfectly replicates the raspy notes of an old hen, making yelps, cuts and purrs downright irresistible. If you're looking for a large degree of vocal versatility and tonal control, look no further.

Mike Roux Triple Reed

Last but not least comes the Triple Reed Mike Roux Signature, named for one of American Hunter's own writers. If the Triple Reed V-Cut is a raspy loudspeaker, the Mike Roux Signature is a soft phonograph—still raspy, but with a warm tone that speaks of the age and experience of an old boss hen. For intermediate to advanced callers, once mastered, its an easy call to blow consistently.

All these diaphragm calls are available for $9.99 apiece, or $29.99 for the bundle of four. At a price like that, grab them all and figure out which is your favorite. You won't be disappointed. For more information, visit 4playturkeycall.com.

Recipe: Deep-Rooted Venison Stew

Several friends and I often circle back to the same campfire debate about which wild game makes the best stew. Mule deer usually leads the pack, with moose close behind, but any well-handled game meat can stand out when you build the right layers of flavor. The real magic starts long before the broth simmers. It comes from the vegetables and mushrooms you choose.
