Earlier this spring, NRA Pubs' Tom Rickwalder journeyed to Florida to hunt Osceola turkeys with the National Wild Turkey Federation, Bushnell and Federal Premium, among others. After tagging his bird, he was given the chance to hunt a management alligator in the state's swampland. Guided by Justin Guerry of Osceola Outdoors, Tom took his first-ever shot at a gator.

It's turkey season, y'all. Though seasons aren't quite open nationwide yet, thousands of hunters have already ventured into the great outdoors this spring to embrace the madness that is turkey hunting.

For a first time handgun hunter, a little practice paid off. NRA Publications Editorial Director John Zent invited Senior Digital Producer Tom Rickwalder to the range to test fire the Taurus Raging Bull in 44 Mag. After a little work, they both decided Rickwalder was ready to go on his first handgun hunt. Turkeys and whitetail would serve as his targets in Virginia. Editorial Director John Zent and Development Manager Tom Rickwalder were in Canadian, Texas, with Winchester Ammo last month for a "R&D" outing, testing a new load that's still in the development process. Early indications are that the developmental load—due for release in January, 2015—will be great shakes for deer hunters. Mt. Hide Outfitters did a fine job putting the hunters on deer on this north Texas ranch.
