Like many hunters, my turkey vest is prepared for the season and is hanging on a hook by the door ready for opening day of the season. Hearing those first spring gobbles thunder through the woods makes the turkey hunter’s heart beat faster and adrenaline spike. If you’re in the market for a new turkey gun, check out these four new options from the 2019 SHOT Show.

1. Remington V3 Turkey Pro
The Remington V3 has become one of the most popular semi-automatic shotguns on the market since its release in 2016. Over the years, the company has refined and tweaked the platform to make it better than ever. This year, Remington has released the V3 Pro series. New features for the new Turkey Pro include an oversized, tapered bolt handle, a rounded safety button, and a redesigned loading port. The V3 Turkey Pro comes standard with a pre-mounted red dot optic that is bore-sighted from the factory at 40 yards. The Tru-Glo Head Banger turkey choke comes pre-installed, and features concentric rings inside to force the pellets to stay closer together, making for a much tighter pattern that will reach farther with better impact. MSRP: $1,195; remington.com.

2. Mossberg 935 Magnum Turkey
The Mossberg 935 Magnum line has proven the industry’s love for 3.5-inch semi-automatic shotguns. The dual gas-vent system allows these firearms to function like a well-oiled machine, cycling shell after shell no matter the size of the load. The new 935 Magnum Turkey is decked out in Mossy Oak Bottomland camouflage and comes standard with adjustable front and rear fiber optic sights. The synthetic stock also hides a small surprise; removing the recoil pad exposes Mossberg’s Stock Drop System, allowing the user to adjust the vertical angle of the stock for improved sight lines and a custom fit. The over-bored barrel offers 10-gauge dimensions, which provides less pellet deformation and tighter, more uniform patterns. MSRP: $756; mossberg.com.

3. Benelli Performance Shop SBE3 Turkey
The Super Black Eagle has been Benelli's best-selling shotgun, and for good reason; they’re accurate, reliable and handle extremely well. This year, the company has introduced the Performance Shop SBE3 Turkey specifically with the turkey hunter in mind. Featuring a synthetic stock with a pistol grip sporting the popular Mossy Oak Bottomland camo pattern and a Midnight Bronze Cerakoted receiver and barrel, this stylish shotgun is a turkey-killing machine. Benelli’s Performance Shop has tuned this version of the SBE3 to make the 24-inch barrel more accurate. Pre-fitted with a Burris red dot sight and turkey choke, the Performance Shop SBE3 Turkey will perform in the field and make a true believer out of any hunter that handles it. MSRP: $3,399; benelliusa.com.

4. Pointer Phenoma Laser Etched – RealTree Original
The Pointer shotgun line is a little less well-known, but they are quickly moving up in the shotgun world. New for 2019 is the Phenoma Laser Etched series. Weighing in at 7.2 pounds, the 28-inch barrel will deliver your load with amazing accuracy. The 3-inch chamber allows the user to reliably cycle their favorite turkey loads without having to reinvent the wheel, and the 14-inch length of pull fits most shooters. The Phenoma has three camouflage patterns to choose from, and the pattern is laser etched into the receiver to give it a seamless look from fore-end to recoil pad. Personally, I feel the Midnight Bronze Cerakoted receiver with the RealTree Original camo pattern will make any hunter disappear into the woods and keep them out of a turkey’s line of sight. MSRP: $999; legacysports.com.

Alligator Hunting Opportunities Are Expanding

This year, both Florida and Louisiana are expanding or introducing new opportunities for alligator hunts. For decades, Florida has estimated that there are over one million in the state—it is, of course, hard to count alligators. Louisiana now says its alligator population exceeds three million. The two states have managed their alligator populations very differently over the last half century, but now both are expanding hunting opportunities to help manage alligator populations.
