On this week's #SundayGunday, we’re checking out the SX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2, the latest iteration of hunter-focused spotting scope from Leupold. Coming in both straight and angled configurations, and the buyer’s choice of 20-60x85mm or 15-45x65mm zoom ratio’s the SX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 has a configuration for any preference and set of circumstances.

Straight SX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2

For our purposes, we tested out the angled 15-45x65 model, for a great blend of lightness and zoom capability. As with most all Leupold glass, the SX-4 Pro Guide HD is tested for performance in extreme climate conditions. Lenses are Diamond Coated and scratch resistant, with a guard-Ion lens coating to help shed dirt, water and smudging. An Arca-Swiss tripod adapter also now comes standard, to seamlessly and easily integrate the spotter with your hunting tripod. Next, FormFit interchangeable eyecups make the system comfortable for hours of glassing. With a magnesium body to shave weight, this spotter is fully waterproof and fogproof.

Out in the field, we found the spotter really excelled in early and late twilight, maintaining a reasonably clear image with only minutes of shooting light left. Aside from the lens technologies already mentioned, this is down in no small part to its phase coated roof prism, which yields edge to edge clarity. An integrated sun shade also spins in and out of the front of the unit, for combating intense glare. Focus was achieved incredibly easily with the large focus adjustment band in the center, and zoom was similarly smooth with the twist adjuster near the eye cup. The eye cup itself rotates in and out for a customizable amount of eye relief. Our test model weighed in just under 4 pounds with the included, neoprene protective sleeve installed. It also ships with lens covers, a strap to attach them, and a cleaning cloth.
