Why Deer Shed Their Antlers

It's officially shed hunting season. As our addiction to this phase of the hunting year grows, so does our need to learn more. Whether it's helping you learn how this process works or throwing out a few tips to help find those trophy sheds, we'll be here to cover it.

The Top Five Outdoor Films…..Ever

It's hard to define what qualifies a motion picture as an "outdoor" film. To make this list the film must center on hunting and/or the outdoors. One of these two elements must be central to the plot, theme, tone and overall narrative of the flick. The movie gets more points if it has more than one—and a lot of shooting. Sure, a good film about love, loss and triumph that has outdoor-based cinematography might seem to fit, but we need to dig a little deeper here. Same goes for Westerns, they have their own category.

Trail Cameras on the Cheap

All I want a trail camera to do for me is take a decent picture of critters that walk in front of it. I want to know when they came by, and don’t really care about video. If it tells me the barometric pressure and moon phase that’s cool, but not essential. I want it to be reliable and, after working with cameras for a while, I know I prefer an infrared camera over those with a white flash because the flash will scare the dickens out of any self-respecting mature buck.

Member's Hunt: Blind Squirrels

NRA Member Tom Moore of Eatonville, Wash., has a message for all the hunters out there who have felt down on their luck in this story of deer hunting success.

Member's Hunt: Changing My Life

I was 13 years old when I declared myself a vegetarian. To me, hunting was wrong. The thought of eating an animal turned my stomach. I cried every time I saw an animal die. I railed at people who hunted. I climbed on my soapbox and preached at the meat-eaters.

Bushnell/Primos "The Truth" Rangefinder

We're huge fans of Bushnell's line of laser rangefinders and, apparently, Primos is, too, as the companies have partnered to create "The Truth" laser rangefinder. Rainproof, compact and accurate up to 850 yards, the unit features Bushnell's Angle Range Compensation, which helps archers to use the correct pin regardless of their shot angle.

Why the Whitetail Population Has Fallen

Deer populations are local affairs, but there have been some surprising regional trends hunters should be aware of.

Are Whitetail Populations Destined to Decline?

Deer populations are down by about 2.8 million since 2008. Some biologists are alarmed by this, while others believe it’s natural and healthy for the overall herd.

A Rifle Hunter's First Bowhunting Buck

A rifle hunter catches the bowhunting bug, becomes a better hunter and bags a fiancé along the way. Still, her hardest-earned “trophy” will be a mature whitetail buck.
