On this week's #SundayGunday, we are talking about one of the best buys out there in hunting rifles: the new Savage Axis 2 Pro.

Savage’s bolt-action Axis rifle line has been a staple in the woods for years, and it’s no wonder why. It’s been a solid performer, is available in just about any caliber you could ask for, and there’s a multitude of model variations to choose from that suit any style of hunting you do. It also doesn’t hurt that this polymer-stocked gun has always been affordable.

This year Savage has upped the budget bolt-action ante with the introduction of the Axis 2 Pro. You don’t get something for nothing, and upgraded features do bump up the price a bit, but also the overall value.

Savage Axis 2 Pro Beauty

At it’s core, the Axis is robust, has a solid top for rigidity, uses a barrel-nut system that makes it easy to set the headspace and change barrels and has a floating bolt head. This all contributes to rifles that are consistently accurate as well as reducing manufacturing and assembly cost.

For the Axis 2 Pro, Savage added a thumb rest for a precision rifle style grip, a more vertical pistol grip with palm swells, a raised comb for better sight alignment, a recessed sling swivel stud up front, improved checkering, and offers some great looking camo patterns called Savage Woodland or Savage Western. They both look great.

Savage Axis 2 Pro Other side

Mechanical upgrades include the addition of the Savage AccuTrigger that breaks right around 2.5 pounds, an improved bolt-handle design, a bronze Cerakoted action and barrel, a slightly heavier profile barrel, and thankfully a threaded muzzle so you can use a suppressor. The Axis 2 Pro also includes a factory-installed Picatinny rail for mounting a scope, a two-position top-tang safety that does not lock the bolt, and a detachable box magazine that is easy to load and insert into the rifle.

Best of all, with an MSRP of $600, the Savage Axis 2 Pro rifle is still affordable. That’s a lot of rifle for such little green. For most hunting scenarios in the U.S., this rifle is ready to go right out of the box. Any hunter wanting to take a bet that won’t break the bank, the Axis 2 Pro will be a solid choice.
