European countries have a long history of making very fine (and very expensive) hunting rifles. But how about a new one from Mauser that, with a synthetic stock, costs less than $1,500? That's what American Hunter contributor John Barsness found in the Mauser Model 12, a rifle he reports shows plenty of German craftsmanship but "was designed specifically for the American market."

How does Mauser cater to American hunters with the Model 12? For starters, it uses readily available scope bases compatible with the ubiquitous Mauser Model 98, and it features a detachable, polymer magazine. Take a look at its other appealing qualities and find out how it performed on the range in the "Hardware" department of the March print edition.
