SIG hasn't shied away from hunting-specific releases in the past year, but the company didn't, at first blush, have much in the way of hunting ammunition. Until today.

In 2014 SIG Sauer launched its Elite Performance Ammunition line. Initially made up of a few loads for defensive handguns, the line continues to expand. It now contains JHP loads for 13 handgun cartridges and FMJ loads for eight handgun cartridges, as well as hunting and match loads for the .300 AAC Blackout. Two of the latest JHP loads for the .357 Mag. and .44 Mag. stand out for hunting.

Sauer rifles are renowned for their European quality and hefty price tags that typically run into the thousands of dollars. So it came as a surprise at the 145th NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits to find a new Sauer rifle, the 100 Classic, with a suggested retail price of $699. It may be the best value we found in Louisville.

SIG Sauer made headlines in recent years by expanding into shooting-related product markets including optics, suppressors and ammunition.

SIG Sauer is known as a quality producer of military and law enforcement firearms that come at a premium price. Previously SIG had an association with the hunting market by way of its sister brands, Blaser, Sauer and Mauser, until they were separated approximately 10 years ago to serve the hunting market as stand-alone entities.

Success of the AR platform with the consumer market led to the birth of a cartridge that utilizes a .30-cal. bullet and is designed for use with AR-15-style rifles and pistols, the .300 Blackout. Overall, in fit and finish you'll find the Sauer 100 Classic XT at or near the top of the budget bolt-rifle class. It’s atop the price ladder, too, but if you want Sauer precision, you won’t find it for any less.
