The Southeast had its glory with Gentleman Bobwhite. Now it’s time for Wild West Bob, the roughest, toughest, meanest quail this side of the Pecos. Yee-haw!

In case you haven't already seen it, there's a video making its rounds on the web that purports to show a hunter snagging a quail right out of the air with his bare hands as it zooms past—much to the amazement of his buddies. It's embedded below.

It's been grim times for the bobwhite quail, as wild populations have fallen due to habitat loss and other reasons. However, through careful efforts and occasional luck from Mother Nature, they have stabilized and even resurged in certain southern and Midwest states.

Wild quail and pheasants may be the main attractions, but the bird boys steal the show near Mexicali.

While U.S. upland bird seasons are closed by March, this month is prime time for quail hunting in some parts of sunny Mexico, particularly for the black-throated bobwhite variety found throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. NRA Outdoors, a service that organizes hunting and fishing excursions specially tailored to NRA members, offers an intriguing three-day hunt in Yucatan’s rural northern coastal plain, not far from the tourist mecca of Cancun. A party of six American hunters, including NRA Outdoors chief Greg Ray and Editorial Director John Zent, found the welcome there to be as warm as the weather, the birds were abundant, and the shooting downright excellent.
