Armed with Kimber rifles, American Hunter Editor-in-Chief Scott Olmsted and his girlfriend journeyed to South Africa for a Plains-game hunt of a lifetime, taking Impala, Kudu, Cape Eland and more. The pair also captured images of the unique flora and fauna scattered across the South African countryside, which they share in this photo gallery.

Eland are the largest antelope in the world, and they can walk for miles. Hunters who have missed a bull learn that soon enough; most give up the track eventually. Too bad most of them don’t hunt behind the white bushman.

You’ve probably heard that African dangerous game can absorb five hits from an Abrams tank and keep on charging. You’ve probably heard that kudu, eland, wildebeest and even impala are so tough from evading lions and leopards they’ll soak up bullets that would floor a North American brown bear. Nonsense.

The game could be whitetails in the East, elk in the West, or anything from duiker to eland in Africa; these five cartridges have been there and done that.
