While Florida may no longer abound with the wild, jungly scenes once depicted in colorful tourism art, enlightened wildlife management has created a new era that’s good for hunters.

Continuing the DOI’s efforts to enhance conservation stewardship, the order seeks to improve wildlife management and conservation, increase access to public lands for hunting, shooting and fishing and puts a greater emphasis on promoting outdoor activities among youth, veterans and minority communities.

A billboard reading, “Wanna see bears? SAY NO! TO TROPHY HUNTING,” was spotted by NRAHLF.org contributor Keith Crowley just outside Yellowstone National Park. The sign stands as a grizzly-sized testament to the anti-hunting crowd’s ignorance on the matter of wildlife management.

I see that my birth state—California—has not relinquished its stranglehold on the notion that the only proper way to manage its wildlife is through emotion. California has become the laughingstock of the nation for its polices, ranging from cultural to fiscal to wildlife management, and continues down that road with absolutely no remorse.

Despite its importance as a good food source, as a wildlife-management tool and as a crucial source of funding for conservation in the United States, hunting remains vulnerable to misinformation and negative attention from ill-informed media, which can encourage support for restrictive legislation. The hunting community must appeal to non-hunters through common goals, motivations and values if our pastime is to remain a fixture in American life.

A couple traveling in northern Ontario were treated to a rare sight of two white ‘spirit’ moose crossing a highway and were able to capture the scene on video.

Next week a lot of people who normally give no thought to hunting will hear reasoned arguments for all the good it does. A nationwide audience including representatives from the media, academia and public-policy institutions will be paying attention on Wednesday, May 4, from 6:45–8 p.m., when the syndicated radio program Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) hosts a live debate titled “Hunters Conserve Wildlife” at New York City’s Kaufman Center.

Changing viewpoints regarding the value of wildlife means only one thing for the future of sound scientific wildlife management: roadblocks.

In southern Alberta, good wildlife management, productive habitat and strong genetics combine to create a sizable number of good-to-excellent pronghorn bucks.
