This week on #SundayGunday, we’re diverging a touch from our usual fare of things that go bang, for something that can bring down the decibels a touch. This week, we’re talking about the Dead Air Sierra 5. Initially designed as a hard-use can for AR pattern rifles, the Sierra 5 has found a dedicated following among hunters who favor the platform, specifically coyote and hog hunters.

With a 5.56mm bore diameter, the Sierra 5 is perfect for suppressing your favorite predator rig, and is rated not just for 5.56 NATO, but all the way up to 224 Valkyrie, with a 2200 ft./lb. energy rating. It is constructed of sturdy stainless steel outer tube and welded Cobalt 6 baffles to withstand the sort of hard firing schedules that can occur when faced with a large pack or sounder. While it’s not directly germane to its hunting applications, the can is actually full-auto rated, which gives an idea of its stalwart build. It is finished in black Cerakote, to withstand even red-hot range days.

The best part for hunters however, is the can’s dimensions. At jus 4.87 inches long as a direct thread, and a mere 10.8 ounces, this is a can you won’t even realize is on the end of your rifle. And while the diminutive dimensions mean it’s not quite the quietest can in Dead Air’s lineup, its flash suppression punches well above its weight, meaning when going after pigs or coyotes with thermals or NODS after dark, the Sierra 5 won’t blind you with every shot. Finally, for those who prefer a dedicated mounting system, the Sierra 5 can be ordered to work with a Xeno adapter, though it does add about an inch and 3 ounces to the overall package.
