Q: I'm going on my first elk hunt this fall and taking my .300 Win. Mag. Any advice on what bullet I should use?
A: For large game such as elk, moose and brown bear, choose a premium, controlled-expansion bullet. You have plenty of options, and while premium bullets come at a higher price than standard offerings, their performance on heavily built animals is worth it. Take a look at the Barnes TSX and TTSX, Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Tip and Trophy Copper, Hornady GMX, Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame and Winchester AccuBond CT. The best plan is to try several in your elk rifle, and then choose the most accurate.
