Per an April 1, 2020 press release from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), department commissioner Dough Vincent-Lang closed all black- and brown-bear hunts due to health and safety concerns stemming from COVID-19.
Brown bears of southeast Alaska defy perceptions of size, and sometimes they can tenaciously cling to life. Though a quick kill is always desired, it's not always possible.
This latest Member's Hunt comes from Larry H. Veilhauer of Ogdensburg, N.Y., who tagged the largest bear taken in North America in 2014 on Kodiak Island.
