Florida hunters need to be aware of two new hunting regulation changes for the 2019–2020 deer season: The implementation of a statewide bag limit on deer and a mandatory reporting requirement for all harvested deer.

A 23-point buck that could be a new Florida state record was poached last October. The buck was initially measured by a Boone and Crockett Club official and grossed a green-score of 207 inches, putting it in the class of the current state record.

A Florida court denied a temporary injunction last month that would have stopped the state’s first black bear hunt since 2015. One hundred and seventy-two hunters, who paid for the opportunity to help manage the black bear population, can head afield in search of a Sunshine State bruin beginning Saturday. 

After deer, hogs are Florida’s next most popular big-game quarry, and compared to most other hog states, the wild porkers are a close second.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 87 (HB 87) into law on June 21, 2024.

At present, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) estimates there are about 1.3 million resident wild alligators, up sharply from a low in the early 1960s that prompted the closure of legal hunting. The alligator population has been on the rebound since, and hunting seasons were reinstated in the 1980s.

Once signed into law, more than half of the nation will recognize this fundamental right. 

There were 52 bears harvested during Florida’s first bear season since 2015.
