Today, August 12, 2020, United States Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhard has established the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) Coordination and Implementation Task Force, to implement the Department of the Interior’s portion of the GAOA.

For new hunters, mentors who have “been there, done that” are invaluable resources. Fortunately, numerous opportunities for beginning hunters to receive expert tutelage exist across the nation as well as online.

The number of hunters involved in our sport is in sharp decline. So where do we look to grow our ranks? The easiest people to recruit are those found within our own social circles.

Acknowledging youth hunter recruitment efforts may not necessarily pay dividends, many states now focus additional effort on the 27- to 40-year-old adults, people who have the time, money and resources to hunt and take their kids hunting.

Federal excise taxes collected on the sale of rifles, shotguns, handguns, ammunition and archery gear have nearly tripled during the past decade, boosting federal funding for the nation’s wildlife and hunter-education programs to record levels even though many handgun, ammo and archery buyers don’t hunt.

Delta Waterfowl will soon be hosting hunter education camps and mentored hunts across four Canadian provinces, thanks in part to a recent $90,000 grant that the organization received from Wildlife Habitat Canada. Delta is expanding its recruitment efforts to secure the next generation of waterfowl hunters.
