There’s a new player in the hunting ammunition market, and its deer load works—well.

The new Fusion 10mm Auto load uses a 200-grain bullet and 1200 fps muzzle velocity to take full advantage of the 10mm Auto cartridge, with more energy and better terminal performance on impact.

While there may be a shine on some of the modern releases in the 6.5mm bore diameter, the 6.5x55 Swedish still makes a sound choice for the practical hunter due to its combination of terminal ballistics, flat trajectory and minimal recoil.

Admittedly, in the final analysis, cost and availability are not big factors in my deer hunting cartridge selection. But they are factored into the equation.

Ammo is in short supply. A brick of .22 LR cartridges commands as much as $40 now. If you can find it, budget center-fire pistol ammo is going for a buck a round.

Some argue that .223 Rem. is not adequate for deer. They say the bullet is too small and the cartridge lacks power. They also claim it is not legal in most states. Factually speaking, they are wrong on all accounts. With the right bullet, .223 Rem. can drive to 20-plus inches and expand to double diameter. And, in the states that allow rifles for deer hunting, only eight do not permit the use of the .223 Rem. As far as the “right bullet” goes, one of the best .223 Rem. loads for deer is the 62-grain Federal Fusion.
