How Hunting Rifles and Gear Have Evolved Over the Last 50 Years

Thanks to various technological advancements over the last 50 years, today’s hunting rifles, ammo and gear can make you a better hunter.

First Focal Plane or Second Focal Plane?

A riflescope’s reticle is placed in either the first focal plane (FFP) or the second focal plane (SFP). The main difference between them is that an SFP reticle will appear to be the same size regardless of magnification. With an FFP reticle, the size of the reticle will appear to change as the scope’s magnification is changed.

Hardware: Zeiss Victory V8

With apologies to vegetable juice and automobile engines, riflescope users can now have a V8, too. A Zeiss V8.

Hardware: Swarovski X5(i)

The Swarovski X5(i) has the best dial-up system of any long-range scope Bryce Towsley has used, and without a doubt it’s the easiest one to learn. Of course, the optics are brilliant; after all it’s a Swarovski.

Hardware: Nikon Monarch 5 ED

Among all the world’s riflescope manufacturers, Nikon has arguably done the best job of making it easy to buy the right scope for specific shooting jobs.

Hardware: Bushnell Elite 3500

All in all, a pragmatic hunter should find the Elite 3500 more than good enough to “ride the river with.” At typical street prices, and with Bushnell’s limited lifetime warranty and one-year money-back guarantee, the Elite 3500 could be considered a best buy, too.

Leupold FX II 3x20

Leupold's 3X line of scopes has returned with the FX II 3x20, an optic that's designed with one purpose in mind: hunting dangerous game.
