First Look: New Ammo for 2010

Our annual survey highlights the year’s best ammunition and components—and you can see most of them under one roof at this year’s NRA Annual Meetings.

The Model 70 Story: A Classic Advanced

As the design and production of the Model 70 continued to evolve throughout the 1960s and 70s, the rifles remained examples of the best American bolt-actions.

America's Best Deer Cartridge: Power

When it comes to power cartridges loaded with bullets that can get the job done, even when shot angles are less than ideal, hunters have never had it so good.

Hornady Superformance Varmint

Hornady is rewriting the rules with its new Superformance Varmint ammunition.

Old School Lead Bullets

One of the hot topics and products now is lead-free bullets. I use them and like them for many applications.

Review: Hornady Superformance Varmint

The Myth: The .223 is too Light for Deer

I read somewhere that today’s premium bullets represent the greatest advance in big game hunting technology since the widespread use of the optical sight, and I agree 100 percent. Many of the myths that we face today are the product of outdated truth.

New Ultra Light Arms Model 20 Short

Melvin Forbes' weight-shaving design, with its hand-built carbon-fiber/Kevlar stock, has influenced the entire lightweight hunting rifle market.

One for the Ladies: The Savage Lady Hunter Rifle

What does it mean when a gun is deemed a "women's rifle?" For some it simply means cutting down the length and painting it pink, but Savage's new Lady Hunter rifle challenges that tendency, offering performance and durability in an attractive, lightweight package. Savage achieved a lighter, shorter barrel by removing weight from the forend, and included a higher comb to better suit women's necks.

Springtime Varminting

Spring has arrived, and, of course, we’ve got a forecast calling for snow. It won’t last, and soon temps will climb back into the 60s and perhaps the low 70s. A lot of guys are getting worked up in anticipation of turkey season. I’ve killed three turkeys, and while turkey hunting is OK by me, I confess that I am not struck with the turkey bug. What trips my springtime trigger is shooting picket pins (ground squirrels) and prairie dogs.
