Suppressors, commonly but less accurately called silencers or “cans,” have been commercially available since 1908. Unfortunately for freedom-and hearing-cherishing Americans, they have been demonized by the anti-gun media largely due to their portrayal as “assassin tools” in Hollywood movies. In reality, however, suppressors are common in other countries because of the vast benefits they offer shooters and hunters. Here are few common myths about suppressors.

Ignore the movies. The real men who conquered the American West would not fit the John Wayne image. Perhaps the definitive case against that image is the life of Christopher “Kit” Carson.

The five million members of the National Rifle Association of America today mourn the loss of former NRA board member Joaquin Jackson, as NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre paid tribute to the legendary Texas Ranger and Second Amendment advocate.

It's hard to define what qualifies a motion picture as an "outdoor" film. To make this list the film must center on hunting and/or the outdoors. One of these two elements must be central to the plot, theme, tone and overall narrative of the flick. The movie gets more points if it has more than one—and a lot of shooting. Sure, a good film about love, loss and triumph that has outdoor-based cinematography might seem to fit, but we need to dig a little deeper here. Same goes for Westerns, they have their own category.

With media consumption and its influence at an all-time high, positive Hollywood-depictions of hunting may provide a way to introduce new hunters to our ranks.
