Hornady’s American Whitetail ammo line has been a huge success, offering a no nonsense combination of Hornady’s InterLock and their excellent brass cases. Deer hunters now have even more to be happy about, with the release of the Hornady American Whitetail Tipped. The new ammunition line relies on the excellent SST (Super Shock Tip) bullet, notorious for its quick transfer of energy which makes it just about perfect for the whitetail hunter.

The Hornady SST features the InterLock ring which not only helps to keep the jacket and core together, but also functions nicely as a crimping groove (or cannelure) so the case mouth can be crimped around the bullet. The signature red polymer tip certainly helps to maintain a uniform Ballistic Coefficient, in addition to acting like a wedge upon impact to deliver the rapid expansion the SST is famous for. The boattail design is certainly desirable feature for those who want a flatter trajectory and better performance in the windy conditions.
Almost all of the cartridges in this ammunition series features the SST, with the sole exception of the 350 Legend, which uses the Hornady FTX bullet. Similar in concept to the SST, but with a pliable polymer tip which makes the cartridge safe for use in the tubular magazine of lever-action rifles.

In the lineup of the American Whitetail Tipped offerings is the 243 Winchester with a 95-grain SST, the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 PRC with a 129-grain SST, the .270 Winchester with a 130-grain SST, the 7mm-08 Remington with a 139-grain SST, the 7mm Remington Magnum and 7 PRC loaded with a 154-grain SST, the .308 Winchester with a 150-grain SST, the .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum and .300 PRC with the 165-grain SST, and the 350 Legend with the 165-grain FTX bullet. If the InterLock bullet of the American Whitetail series doesn’t engender enough confidence (and I personally love that bullet), the American Whitetail Tipped with the SST might be the proper choice for you.
