Who doesn’t appreciate a “free ride” when it comes to one’s meal ticket? According to the OutdoorHub, an online resource for hunting and shooting sports news, when this South African lion spotted a hippo carcass in the Sabi River on July 13, it honed in on what must have seemed the easiest catch of the day. But when it swam out to the hippo, the current was so strong the lion was stuck using the free meal as a life raft.

The lion fell off and got swept away several times, but it eventually made its way back onto the carcass, dug in with its claws, held on for dear life—and even managed to take a few tasty bites.
