The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has updated the state’s wolf hunting regulations to extend the season by one month. Rather than opening the season on Oct. 1, the WGFD has decided a Sept. 1 opening date would give hunters more time in the field. It would also provide hunters with archery licenses the opportunity to take a wolf with their bow, as archery season opens the first of September.

In addition to the expanded season, the WGFD has also increased the harvest quota from 44 wolves to 58, and hunters may now obtain two wolf tags instead of a single permit.

“By extending the season by a month and increasing the harvest quota we’ve given archery hunters, and hunters in general, more opportunities to take wolves,” explained Dan Thompson, WGFD’s large carnivore section supervisor. “We greatly appreciate the cooperation and support of hunters during the process.”

Regarding the harvest increase, Thompson assures all regulation changes were made to help the state keep the wolf population in balance with its management plan.

Field Tested: Federal Heavyweight TSS

Last year, I had the pleasure of travelling to the Yucatan peninsula in search of ocellated turkey. Over the course of the hunt, however, I also got to see Federal Heavyweight TSS at work in the field on not just turkey, but the elusive coatimundi, which is a significantly tougher proposition. Read on for my thoughts on this incredibly effective shotshell.

Review: Winchester 400 Legend

Winchester’s new 400 Legend is a streamlined, mid-sized straight-wall cartridge intended to fill the gap between its wildly popular 350 Legend and the notorious 450 Bushmaster. It is—in our opinion—a masterstroke of genius.
