I sat down to my reloading bench this morning to put together some .45 Colt ammo for my new Ruger Flattop. It got me to thinking: The .45 Colt just might be the best—or at least the most versatile—handgun cartridge of all time. Of course, that only holds true if you consider the role of a handgun in its traditional sense—a reactive tool for stopping threatening or edible creatures at close range.

On April 26, 1877 a Single Action Army revolver, serial number 36xxx was shipped from the Colt factory in Hartford, Conn. to the Colt Patent Fire-Arms Mfg. Co., London Agency, London, England.

Colt's New Frontier is a well-made handgun that will serve nicely as a small- to medium-game firearm for the traditional handgun hunter.

Considering that the .45 Colt has been with us for 143 years, it remains a completely relevant, powerful, and well-balanced handgun cartridge, that is equally at home at a Cowboy Action Shoot as it is in the hunting fields.

The drought has ended: Colt has reintroduced its popular Python revolver, which features significant upgrades to the original design.

When Colt introduced its new and improved Python revolver a couple of years ago, hunters admired it but waited for their gun: the Anaconda. Last year they got it, a .44 Magnum hunting handgun with a glossy finish, big grips and the world-famous Colt ventilated rib.

Colt’s popular “Snake Gun” revolver series gains a new addition with the updated Anaconda, featuring a fully adjustable rear sight, wide hammer spur, open-back rubber Hogue grips, replaceable front sight with orange insert, and a top strap already drilled and tapped for mounting optics.

In 2020, Colt relaunched its renowned Python revolver with two barrel length options—4.25-inch and 6-inch. For 2022, the company has announced that it is bringing back the 3-inch-barrelled version.
