You might think I am scraping the bottom of the barrel to write about a bore guide. Back when I got started in all this hunting and shooting stuff the only folks who used bore guides were the benchrest crowd.
It may be the easiest time of the year to take a big buck, but let’s face it, you can still screw it up. Here’s how Michael Waddell approaches the rut.
The word “superstand” refers to a rare stand location that consistently produces bucks regardless of the season or conditions. Most times hunters luck into them. But you can find your own superstand, or even make one, if you know what to look for.
During the rut, the bucks themselves may not always know where they will be next, so how can you expect to know? Luck will always play a role in your success, but when you play the odds and focus on those things that are predictable, luck will find you a whole lot sooner.
Hunt the edges. It’s an obvious play, but along with the corn rows and bean fields, there are whitetail pathways you may not be thinking about, and big bucks use them for that very reason.
No dog? No problem. You can still bag a limit of pheasants. Hunt model pheasant habitat, and remember what a ringneck likes to do—run. Also, a couple of partners as drivers and standers always come in handy.
