This week on #SundayGunday, we’re checking out the Leupold VX-6HD Gen 2, the latest iteration of hunt-focused riflescope from one of America’s most revered brands. Coming with six different combinations of magnification and objective lens, the VX-6HD line has what you need whether you’re targeting far-off elk, or engaging song dogs at closer ranges.

VX-6HD Gen 2 LPVO

Its moniker comes from the optic’s 6x magnification ratio, meaning that its LPVO variant can zoom from 1-6x, while its most expansive magnification runs from 4-24x. A Professional-Grade Optical system promotes light transmission, keeping the VX-6HD crystal clear from dawn to dusk. This is of added importance for a hunting scope, as unlike competitions or more general shooting, most shots take place in the twilight, given that is when game animals tend to move about most aggressively. To adjust zoom, an integrated throw lever provides rapid precision, while the ballistic turrets make use of competition-grade adjustments. A side-focus knob adjust the scope’s parallax, making the reticle intensely clear at any distance and cutting down on perceived movement. Reticles are all in the second focal plane, are illuminated for added precision and rapid acquisition in low-light conditions, and boast motion sensor technology to conserve battery which shuts off the illumination when movement is undetected for five minutes. Even cooler, an electronic reticle level, when turned on, will flash the reticle when it’s not level. This will both ensure a level rifle for long shots, and can even help level the scope when mounting.

Examining Scope

Contributing to more clarity and durability is the VX-6HD’s Guard-Ion lens coating, which sheds dirt and water for an ever-clear image. Lenses are also covered by Alumina Flip Back lens covers when not in use. In addition to this lens protection, the scope itself is waterproof, fogproof and shockproof, so you can carry it into the backcountry without worry about either conditions, or bumps and bangs. The coolest part though? Leupold’s new Speedset Dial System is fully tool-less, meaning you can zero and swap in custom dials without touching an Allen or Torx. Pretty neat capability for those of us who often forget our optics kit when taking to the field.
