First Look: Mossberg 590S Pump-Action Shotguns

Mossberg has announced the introduction of its new 590S series of 12-gauge pump-action shotguns, capable of cycling 1¾-, 2¾- and 3-inch shotshells interchangeably, in any combination, without the use of an adaptor.

Key design changes of the 590S include a redesigned elevator and bolt slide combined with the addition of an energy-absorbing bumper. This innovative platform allows users to simultaneously load their choice of shotshell length and type for their specific needs, in any order. Use of shorter shell lengths will also increase the overall capacity of the 590S.

Based upon Mossberg’s venerable 500 pump-action platform, the company’s 590 guns include non-binding twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lock-up and anti-jam elevator, dual extractor, drilled and tapped receivers, and a universally recognized, ambidextrous top-mounted safety.

Additional features of the 590S series models include a black synthetic stock and fore-end, a cylinder bore barrel with a matte blue metal finish (there is an AccuChoke-compatible barrel on the 20-inch version), sling swivel studs, a convenient clean-out magazine tube with cap for ease of maintenance and a logo-engraved receiver.

There are currently four models of the 590S available:
