Two bills introduced in North Carolina’s legislature, House Bill 559 and Senate Bill 677, may bring about several positive changes for hunters in the state if signed into law.

On Aug. 1, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., handed down its 54-page ruling on Great Lakes wolves: Gray wolves will remain protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and state management will not be allowed. While the ruling doesn’t immediately remove federal protections from wolves in the Western Great Lakes states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, the court’s decision regarding the important issue of a “distinct population segment” (DPS) is a win for sportsmen.

N.C. House Bill 640—the Outdoor Heritage Act—gains momentum as Childress cites provisions aimed at enhancing hunters’ rights, bolstering the state’s economy and increasing outdoor opportunities for youth.

The NRA recently led the charge to defeat New York Senate Bill 4686, an anti-hunting bill backed by animal “rights” groups. The bill would have banned the importation, possession, sale or transportation of the “Big Five African Species” to include hunting trophies.

NRA has hunters’ backs as it monitors the status of recently proposed measures restricting the import, export and interstate sale of ivory.
