Media Day Thoughts

Yesterday I spet the day at the 2012 Media Day at the Range in Boulder City, Nev., and while my back and feet ache, there are some new guns and optics this year that excite me. Here are a few that I saw and shot:

Ruger American Rifle
For years Ruger has made its reputation by making robust, quality guns at an affordable price point. The new Ruger American rifle continues that legacy. To be sure, it is not a finely made arm of forged receivers, highly polished and deeply blued steel mated with fine walnut. But it is a bolt-action rifle with a super-slick, oversized bolt within a tubular receiver with a 60-degree lift. It has a detachable magazine and a synthetic stock. Best part is its MSRP is less than $500; street price may be in the high 300s.

Zeiss Conquest line
For those who jones for German optics but can’t tote the note, the Zeiss Conquest line is something they should look into. The ability to acquire Zeiss quality in a riflescope or hunting binocular for less than a grand should guarantee robust sales. The difference between the Conquest and the top-tier Victory line? Some of the coatings used on the Victory line that increase light transmission by a fraction of 1 percent are not on the Conquest glass. The human eye cannot tell the difference.

Colt 1877 Bulldog Gatling Gun
Without a doubt for me, the coolest gun on the firing line was the Colt 1877 Bulldog Gatling Gun. The Bulldog is a smaller version of the Gatling gun. It still fires the .45-70 cartridge, and its polished brass exterior and beautiful wood tripod with brass furnishings exudes class. Just 50 of these reproductions will be made. At $50,000 each, it won’t be found in every gunners’ safe, but there was no doubt about its cool factor. I got the thrill when I had the opportunity to crank 20 rounds through this beauty.
