Video: Mallard Duckling Hatches from Egg

Delta Waterfowl researchers captured the extraordinary video below of a mallard duckling's first moments of life. The video was shot while performing nest checks near the group's Minnedosa, Manitoba, research station. What a cool stroke of luck.

Some interesting facts about nesting ducks:

• Hens lay an egg per day
• Average clutch size is 8-12 eggs
• Despite the fact the first egg is laid about a week prior to the last, all ducklings will hatch within a span of a few hours
• Incubation time is about 28 days
• A healthy hen can renest two or even three times if her initial attempt is destroyed by a predator
