The Day I Outshot Jeff Johnston

This is no time for humble modesty. It may never happen again.

On Saturday, August 8, 2009, I defeated American Hunter managing editor Jeff Johnston—twice—in the shotgun game known as five-stand. This is no time for modesty. After all, this may never happen again. We’re talking about a guy who’s spent the last five years beating me mercilessly in every shooting game in existence; who every year shoots a bigger deer than me; and who, on the rare occasion I arrive at a social event with a date, will introduce himself to her thusly: “Hi, I’m Kyle’s boss.”

We were at the range to shake off the rust and prepare for our upcoming shooting lesson tomorrow and Thursday with Gil and Vicki Ash, who’ve published several books and videos on shooting and founded the Optimum Shotgun Performance Shooting School. Gil and Vicki insist they’ll be able to tell me just what in the heck I’ve been doing wrong all these years. I'll keep you posted.

I’m sure that Jeff, being a naturally talented marksman and committed student of all things shooting, will take away enough from the lesson to ensure I never again savor victory. No matter. Last Saturday, for a fleeting moment, I was the better shot. And that’s good enough for me.

How are you at Big Buck Hunter's African Hunts? That's a real shooting contest. I bet you're one of those guys who shoots the cows right off the bat.
