Three generations of the Gouger family have gathered every fall to hunt deer on a 128-acre farm in northwestern New Jersey since the 1950s. None of them has ever called it a “deer camp.” The place is just “the cabin.” But every hunter of the farm is aware the hunt endures today in the face of encroaching development.

On Feb. 8, during the Great American Outdoors Show, the Pope and Young Club convened a special panel of judges for a potential world-record black bear.

The New Jersey Fish and Game Council unanimously voted to close the ruffed grouse hunting season statewide, effective immediately, citing declining populations due to lack of suitable habitat, as well as predation, weather and disease.
