A grand jury in Galia County, Ohio, indicted eight on multiple felony charges, including the poaching of whitetail deer and the theft of deer meat.

As most of you know, I love my rather bucolic state of residence. A lot of folks like to characterize us as backward and unsophisticated. But as if it were a scene from the CSI television series, some Wyoming game wardens were able to determine that a 185-inch 4x5 mule deer buck was taken in an area closed to hunting in 2010 because of the contents of the buck’s stomach.

It's been awhile and, for that, we apologize. Without further ado, we present the latest addition of Dumb Poacher Stories.

A group of Pennsylvania hunters who were caught harvesting well beyond the legal limit of snow geese earlier this year have been sentenced, and face a combined $55,000 in fines.

According to USA Today and worldwide social media posts, elephant poachers in Tanzania have killed British helicopter pilot Roger Gower, who was working with the Texas-based Friedkin Conservation Fund and Tanzanian wildlife authorities to stop them in their tracks.

Make no mistake: Poachers are not hunters. Poachers are criminals and should be dealt with as such.

According to The Oregonian, two men were arrested last week after a driver on nearby Interstate 84 in Columbia River Gorge spotted a figure apparently bending over the body of a dead big game animal. The duo was later charged with poaching two trophy bighorn sheep.

While the government of South Africa says its ban on rhino-horn trade will stop poaching and illegal trade, rhino owners and conservationists say the decades-old ban accomplishes the opposite.
