NRA’s Jim Porter Takes His Rio Grande Gobbler in Texas; Three Steps Now Completed Toward the Grand Slam

Rio Ammunition has announced the inauguration of a new sporting cartridges manufacturing facility in Marshall, Texas. The company officially cut the ribbon on its new factory on June 25, in the presence of representatives from the state of Texas and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On a dove and hog hunt in west Texas last year, America Hunter field editor Brian McCombie made some new friends, tested out new gear and took the biggest boar hog of his life. The hunt was held at the T-Diamond Ranch, an NRA Outdoors approved outfitter headed by Roy Wilson. McCombie was joined by eight other hunters, all NRA members—including two father-son teams.

Editorial Director John Zent and Development Manager Tom Rickwalder were in Canadian, Texas, with Winchester Ammo last month for a "R&D" outing, testing a new load that's still in the development process. Early indications are that the developmental load—due for release in January, 2015—will be great shakes for deer hunters. Mt. Hide Outfitters did a fine job putting the hunters on deer on this north Texas ranch.

In a scene that could have leapt from the pages of a Western, Texas native Bill Williams successfully defended himself and his wife from an intruding black bear.

States are setting dates for 2016-2017 hunting seasons, and wingshooters in Texas have reason to be pleased. The Lone Star State will host a 90-day dove season, its longest in 80 years.
