We did the same in S. WI, but despite being well under freezing nightly for weeks and now under 12+ inches of snow, the plot has not been touched. And it came up great: 6"+ bulbs on nearly all of it, big, green leaves. So it won't just "magically" be effective if you have an area where the deer are all used to moving off to other farms every winter: they will never even find it.
