It’s a time for renewal. The fields are greening up; ducks and geese have returned on their way to their northern breeding grounds; newborn colts and calves are hitting the ground; and deer and elk are starting to sprout their annual headgear.

Just watch a new born fawn stumble and stammer about as it tries to find some semblance of balance. I don't like to say it in public, but sometimes I join my girlfriend in the chorus of whimpers when a cute animal pops up on the Discovery Channel, but never—and I mean never—in the deer woods. I am there to complete my goal—kill a mature buck or doe. No time for gushing.

Wait, make that a triple take. Do I need to get Walker Texas Ranger out to Utah to lay down the law? It seems that after maybe 20 or 30 poached animals a competent law man would take notice. But I digress. At least the Manson family of poaching is out of the woods and cradled in the long arms of the law. This is probably the worst case of illegally harvesting game I've ever come across. Can anybody out there top it?

Perry’s wherewithal with a handgun, especially when the blood and adrenaline were pumping. Heck, I can barely hit a wily coyote with a .22-250 Remington 700, a 14X Leupold and a Johnny Stewart predator call, much less my carry gun. And kudos to you, Gov., for not being afraid to exercise your right of self-defense and property. I hope other wimpish governors, like Mike Bloomberg, for example, who would’ve had to have his team of bodyguards fly to the rescue, are taking notes.
They may be marketed as about as guaranteed a technique as you can buy for the turkey woods, but truth be told, too many folks buy these things thinking they will help them overcome a lack of scouting, poor calling skills and lack of hunting experience. They can certainly be a part of your hunting plan, but not a backwoods sort of government bail-out plan that magically will solve all your problems. What do you think?
