I Carry Concealed…In My Dreams

As I spend more time around guns—and shooting them—I find myself having more dreams where I'm continuing to familiarize myself with firearms.

I like to think that our dreams are preparing us for potential circumstances, or helping us deal with our fears. As someone who never had guns in the house until we moved in with my grandpa (who only used them to wage war against the groundhog in the backyard—and lost), I can honestly say that I had been a bit nervous around guns and the idea of concealed carry was something completely beyond the realm of possibility for me…until more recently.

Last night I had a dream that I bought a Walther PPS X 9 mm—a gun that doesn't actually exist, but props to my dream self for at least remembering a proper brand name—and was carrying concealed for the first time. It felt awkward at first on me and I was walking strangely, very aware of what was holstered at my side. I went to bed after buying the new handgun and placed it at my couch-side, because apparently I sleep on a couch in my dreams.

In the middle of my “dream sleep” I awoke to the noise of what ended up being two intruders. I quickly stood, grabbed the gun, and informed them that I had a firearm and would shoot them if they didn't get out. One guy chose to run, and the other came at me like a bat out of hell, so I shot at him. The first shot made a pathetic, cartoon-like "pue" noise and veered off to the left with no apparent force, and I thought I was a goner; however, the second shot went right through him. Then I really woke up, happy to learn it was just a dream.

As I spend more time around guns—and shooting them—I find myself having more dreams like this where I'm continuing to familiarize myself with firearms. I hope I never have to experience a home invasion in real life, but hopefully my dream training will have helped. I'm not ready to carry concealed just yet, nor am I ready to buy a handgun, but at least I can say I'm heading in the right direction!
